Overview

Founded in 1991, the Department of Statistics at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) is a pioneer in higher education in Bangladesh, particularly within the realms of science and technology. As the country's first science and technology university, SUST has built a reputation for academic excellence and innovative research, with the Department of Statistics recognized as one of its largest and most influential entities, now also focusing on the growing field of data science.

Academic Program Overview

The Department's distinguished faculty comprises 23 dedicated members, including 18 Professors, 1 Associate Professor, 3 Assistant Professors, and 1 Lecturer, all devoted to enhancing statistical education, research, and data science applications. Currently, the department serves 431 students at both undergraduate and graduate levels, offering a comprehensive suite of programs including Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. Honors), Master of Science (MS), MPhil, and PhD degrees. Each year, approximately 80 undergraduates and 50 graduate students enroll, highlighting a robust demand for its diverse programs, especially in data sciences.

To date, the department has celebrated numerous academic accomplishments: 5 PhD graduates, 3 MPhil graduates, 72 MS thesis students, 749 MS graduates, and 986 B.Sc. (Honors) graduates. Presently, 4 PhD candidates and 14 MS thesis students are conducting advanced research, making significant contributions to statistical methodology and the expanding field of data sciences.

The Department of Statistics is equipped with two modern computer laboratories featuring over 140 computers and extensive internet access, which allows students to work with state-of-the-art statistical software and data science tools essential for their academic and research pursuits. The seminar library boasts a vast collection of books, journals, periodicals, and other scholarly publications, providing students with abundant resources to support their learning and research initiatives in statistics and data sciences.

Furthermore, the department actively promotes research output, with faculty and students frequently publishing their findings in reputable scientific journals and book chapters. The department also hosts seminars and workshops centered on contemporary research topics and data science advancements, fostering an environment of intellectual exchange and continuous learning among faculty and students.
