Department of Forestry and Environmental Science

Forests play a vital role in sustaining local, regional, and global ecosystems by providing essential products and services—such as timber, fuel, food, fodder, and medicinal plants—while supporting biodiversity and human well-being.

At the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science, SUST, we are proud to offer one of the leading undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Bangladesh in the fields of forestry and environmental science. As global awareness grows around sustainable resource management and environmental stewardship, opportunities for professionals in these areas have never been more important or impactful.

In the context of Bangladesh's growing population and limited land resources, our department provides unique opportunities to contribute to national development while preserving biodiversity and natural ecosystems. Our mission is to harmonise forest functions with human needs through innovative research, education, and community engagement.

Our faculty members hold advanced degrees and training from globally reputed institutions in Europe, Australia, Canada, and Asia. Our strengths span forest ecology, environmental law and governance, forest biotechnology, community-based natural resource management (CBNRM), forest economics, wildlife management, and sustainable development.

A hallmark of our academic program is its integrated and applied approach. Students begin with foundational knowledge and progressively engage in practical, field-based learning involving key stakeholders—such as forest managers, indigenous communities, and policymakers—on issues of forest protection, sustainable utilisation, and cultural integration.

Recognising the urgency of climate change and ecosystem degradation, we continuously update our curriculum to address emerging global challenges. Emphasis is placed on climate adaptation, mitigation, resilience, and inclusive conservation strategies, particularly involving vulnerable communities.

We are confident that our graduates are well-equipped with the knowledge, skills, and vision to lead in the fields of forest and environmental governance, both nationally and internationally.
